What is Alternative Therapy?

Many parents who have a child with a developmental disability have found great benefits in pursuing various alternative therapies and have learned first-hand about the significant impact these therapies have had in their child’s life.

Most of these “unconventional” therapies have been around longer than those used in Western medicine, but they are often not accepted by the conventional medical community due to lack of research and overall awareness.

Alternative therapies can help manage the symptoms and improve the quality of life for a child with a disability or special need. Many alternative therapies complement more traditional therapies that a child may be receiving, such as physical, occupational and speech therapy. Some alternative providers may offer to work in partnership with a child’s doctors and/or conventional therapy team to help insure the most effective and appropriate care.

Most Popular Alternative Therapies

Following are a few of the most popular alternative therapies for children with a developmental disability:

  • Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)
  • Hippotherapy (therapeutic horseback riding)
  • Aquatic Therapy
  • Suit Therapy
  • Conductive Education
  • Anat Baniel Method
  • Stem Cell Treatment

In addition, we have heard about the benefits of Craniosacral Therapy, EEG Biofeedback, therapeutic yoga, acupuncture and massage therapy . . . all of which are not covered by insurances.

Affording Alternative Therapies

One of the biggest challenges with pursuing almost any alternative therapy is getting insurance to approve the therapy and cover the cost. Families are often forced to pay out-of-pocket or need to fundraise to afford therapy. These added expenses can take a significant financial toll on the entire family.

However, Robbie Foundation offers funding toward alternative therapy. Robbie Foundation recognizes the benefits it has on children and chooses to make a difference in the lives of children by improving their quality of life.

This is one of the many ways Robbie Foundation helps children. Please learn more and consider getting involved by donating or volunteering.
