GearRunners raise money for children with special needs
Portland, Maine – Hundreds hit the pavement Saturday to raise money for children with special needs.
The Robbie Foundation provides adaptive equipment and assistive technology to kids with developmental disabilities. The annual 5K race helps raise the money to buy those items, which aren’t covered by health insurance.
Families who have benefitted say the Robbie Foundation has made a huge difference in their lives. That’s why many want to give back by participating in the race. Jessica Creedon’s 9 year-old son, Jacob, received an iPad from the Robbie Foundation. Creedon says it was important for her to give back.
“To help them not only in providing equipment that they need, but also emotional support,” Creedon said. “When they see you in the community and say, ‘Hi, how are you doing?’ they really mean it.”
This was the second year for the 5K, and it has grown. Last year there were 150 runners, this year there were 250.
